· 26-sec read
Apache grew out of patches to the NCSA web server in 1995, and the pun "A PAtCHy server" spread quickly. The Apache Software Foundation says co-founder Brian Behlendorf first used the name to honor the Apache peoples, and that the pun grew from rumor into lore into legend. Contemporary reports say the group used "A Patchy Server" as a joke name early on, which helped the myth along.
