Technical debt came from a finance app

Did you know 'technical debt' came from a 1992 finance app?

· Martin Fowler · Kent Beck · 23-sec read

"Shipping first time code is like going into debt. A little debt speeds development so long as it is paid back promptly with a rewrite."

Ward Cunningham introduced the metaphor in a 1992 OOPSLA experience report on WyCash, a Smalltalk portfolio system for cash securities. He wrote: "Shipping first time code is like going into debt. A little debt speeds development so long as it is paid back promptly with a rewrite." And: "Every minute spent on not-quite-right code counts as interest on that debt."

Popular version vs. what really happened

Popular version

Popular version: technical debt = messy code.

What really happened

Ward's framing: debt is fine if paid back promptly; the danger is never repaying it.

Why it matters

The metaphor was about shipping to learn and then repaying by refactoring, not permission to write sloppy code.
