On February 2, 2025, Andrej Karpathy posted: "There's a new kind of coding I call 'vibe coding', where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists." He described accepting every diff and pasting errors back without comment, calling it "not too bad for throwaway weekend projects." Nine months later Collins Dictionary named 'vibe coding' its Word of the Year 2025.

Popular version vs. what really happened

Popular version

Common drift: 'vibe coding' now means any AI-assisted coding.

What really happened

Karpathy's original meant not reading the diffs at all, for throwaway weekend projects.

Why it matters

The original definition was about not reading the code, scoped to throwaway projects. Production code still needs review, tests and an owner.
